The Taxi Voucher Program will allow Whittier Dial-A-Ride passengers to travel to medical and dental facilities in the cities of Hacienda Heights, La Habra, La Mirada, Pico Rivera, Santa Fe Springs and unincorporated Whittier territory, as well as St. JudeHospital in Fullerton, BeverlyHospital in Montebello and the KaiserHospitals in Bellflower and Downey.  In addition, the taxi vouchers will allow passengers to travel to RoseHillsCemetery and Mortuary, which is in unincorporated Whittier. “The City of Whittier is pleased to offer this expanded service for our Dial-A-Ride passengers,” said Fran Shields, Director of Community Services.  “Under many medical and dental plans, our passengers have to use facilities outside of Whittier, and obtaining transportation can be difficult.  This allows the City to provide an extra and necessary service for these passengers.” The Taxi Voucher Program is funded through Proposition A Transit tax monies, Shields said. Under the program, passengers may purchase taxi vouchers with a face value of $7 for $1 each, up to a maximum of 12 vouchers per month per person.  They may use a maximum of two vouchers per one way ride to travel to Hacienda Heights, La Habra, La Mirada, Pico Rivera, Santa Fe Springs, unincorporated Whittier and RoseHills and a maximum of three vouchers per one way ride to travel to St. Jude Hospital in Fullerton, Beverly Hospital in Montebello, Kaiser Bellflower and Kaiser Downey hospitals.  The Taxi Voucher Program will operate from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.  Advance reservations of 24-hours are recommended; however, passengers may receive same-day service subject to taxicab availability. Special vehicles to accommodate wheelchairs are available and must be reserved 24 hours in advance. Those eligible to purchase the taxi vouchers must be Whittier Dial-A-Ride passengers with a current application on file.  The vouchers may be purchased either by mail or in person at the Whittier Historic Depot, the UptownSeniorCenter or at ParnellPark.  The vouchers are valid for 60 days from date of purchase, and unused vouchers may be exchanged for updated ones. Free public information meetings concerning the new taxi voucher program will be held at the Uptown Senior Center, 13225 Walnut St on May 20 and May 29 at 10:30 a.m.  City staff will also be available at the Information & Referral Fair at the same location on May 22 from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. to answer any questions. For more information on the new taxi voucher service or to sign up for Whittier Dial-A-Ride service, call the Transit Office at (562) 698-2131.
